I remember when “travel” first entered my thoughts. It was in fifth grade history class and my fascination with the Deocletian Emperor whose reforms fundamentally changed the structure of Roman imperial government. I couldn’t wait to visit the Marjan Hill which he established as a recreational area for the palace where he lived in retirement tending to his vegetable gardens. His palace eventually became the core of the modern-day city of Split. Little did I realize at the time that my fifth grade class was my first “group tour”.
Just imagine my excitement moving from Croatia to Germany and the travel opportunities that would shortly follow. Frankfurt was ideally located for weekend getaways and soon Strasbourg and Paris became my weekend destinations. This is where I discovered food I never thought I would love. Michelin star restaurants became as important as Unesco heritage sites. I still remember my first Michelin dining at Le Grand Vefour; I was barely 20.
Europe still beckoned, but I dreamed of Asia and in the 80’s I planned my first trip to the continent; six weeks through Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Korea and Japan. What I still vividly recall from that trip is the Cherry blossom in Kyoto. In the 90’s African continent was on my list. Since then, I have traveled to more then 100 countries around the globe in pursuit of Unesco World Heritage sites, cultural immersion and food & wine. Here are just few highlights of my travels:
Seeing polar bears in the Arctic, (expedition cruise) Christmas markets, whirling dervish (in Konya – following the foot steps of Rumi) ballooning in Cappadocia, Patagonia’s Perito Moreno Glacier Trek, learning to Tango in Buenos Aires, Trekking in Bhutan, motor gliding in Nepal, seeing Taj Mahal at full moon, Tiger safari in India, rafting on Zambezi River, Mokoro safari in Okavango, (Botswana) cruising on the Nile, climbing Masada at Sunrise, taking the views from the Jungfraujoch (highest mountain in Europe), seeing Bagan from the air balloon, Bolshoi Ballet & La Scala Opera performance, crossing the Atlantic on Crystal Serenity, New Year at Emperor’s Ball at Hofburg Palace.
