The amazing Turks and Caicos is an archipelago of about 40 coral islands in the Atlantic Ocean just south of the Bahamas and about a 90 minute flight from Miami to the Providenciales International Airport. Providenciales (Provo) is easily accessible by non-stop flights from New York, Miami, Dallas, Atlanta, Boston, and Newark as well as direct flights from Montreal and Toronto in Canada. Visitors from London arrive via Antigua. Most resorts and villas on Provo are primarily centered along the 5-mile stretch of the north shore of the island’s pristine beach of Grace Bay, a hallmark of the Turks and Caicos Islands. This wide beach is beautiful with fine white sand, crystal clear water and is protected from the Atlantic Ocean swells by a barrier reef.
The best thing about designing travel is experiencing and getting to love some of the most beautiful places on earth and Turks and Caicos is right up there with the most prominent. I’ve visited many places this year and was so pleased to be invited to visit two amazing properties–The Palms and The Shore Club on Turks and Caicos and add them to my list for 2017.
The Palms Resort
The Palms is one of the 5-star luxury resorts hugging Grace Bay Beach. Its grounds are impeccable. I stayed in a 1-bedroom 1500 sq. ft. suite with a bath and a half, overlooking the pool and ocean. It was exquisitely designed with a full kitchen, a dining room and a large furnished terrace with a day bed style sun lounge–just perfect for a nap al fresco.
Dining on premises was fantastic too. Breakfast was served in a tropical garden with the option to choose from an extensive hot and cold buffet, or to custom order. Dinner at Parallel 23, featuring a Caribbean fusion inspired menu, was outstanding and so was the “barefoot in the sand” surf & turf dinner, beautifully staged beachside.
The Spa, one of the largest on the island, is sumptuous. It is secluded and away from other facilities of the resort. The relaxation area with reflecting pools was a peaceful oasis surrounded by green space and eight free-standing treatment rooms. My Swedish massage was outstanding
The Shore Club Resort
I was thinking that it couldn’t get any better until we approached the stone gateway entrance at The Shore Club. This is the island’s newest and most luxurious resort, and is the only resort claiming the 3 miles of the Long Bay south side of the island. My one bedroom plus study suite was amazing with a huge patio and beautiful views of the ocean. This time I was on the ground floor in building One, which afforded direct access from the patio to the adult pool and the beach. I loved it!
Everything at The Shore Club is so well thought out, including the placement of the pools. The three Dune Spa cabanas are strategically placed to enjoy the beautiful views of the sea. They were under post-hurricane Irma reconstruction while I was there, so I didn’t get a chance to see it all. I did get a hard-hat tour of the private villas, each one boasting 5 bedrooms. The villas are scheduled for completion by mid-December 2017.
Of the 3 dining venues, the dinner at Sui-Ren (named for the Japanese word for water lily) was extraordinary. This is the only restaurant in Turks and Caicos to offer a menu that blends Peruvian and Japanese cuisine, a genuine treat for discriminating taste-buds. Our host ensured that we experience the local restaurants too. The lunch and dinner venues left nothing to be desired. I am not a water person, so I skipped the catamaran experience which sounded amazing, and something not to be missed by any water enthusiast.
An Amazing Experience
Each of these resorts has its own personality and idyllic set of features. My personal preference was the Shore Club location on Long Bay, the south side of the island to Grace Bay. It is much more private; the sand is compact; the water is clear with two to four-foot depths going out thousands of feet.
Visiting these Turks and Caicos resorts was an amazing experience for me. I’m not sure what I expected, but certainly not what I found: an exquisite island studded with luxury resorts, villas, fine dining—an ideal location for all who treasure safety, seclusion and sophistication.
